Je discutais avec des collègues sur les différences d’interprétation du mot ‘libéral’ au Canada et aux États-Unis d’Amérique (un libéral étant associé à la droite affairiste et conservatrice ici, plutôt que démocrate, libertaire et dépensier aux É.U.). Ça m’a fait penser à la chanson ‘Love Me I’m a Liberal’ composée par Phil Ochs et reprise (avec un texte modifié) sur l’album Prairie Home Invasion de Jello Biafra et Mojo Nixon. Les deux personnages sont les dignes descendants du mouvement contre-culturel de la fin des années 60 et se sont permis des interprétations vigoureuses de quelques classiques ou trésors oubliés de la chanson américaine. Le premier (né Eric Reed Boucher) a fondé les Dead Kennedys à San Francisco; il est aussi un musicologue chevronné et sympathisant des idées politiques de la gauche. Le deuxième (né Neill Kirby McMillan) fait partie du mouvement psychobilly et saupoudre ses chansons de références à la culture populaire et se sert de la chanson pour propager ses idées politiques libertaires.

En tout premier lieu, Atomic Power des frères Chester et Lester Buchanan, valait d’être ressuscitée. Un texte qui résume parfaitement l’angoisse populaire devant une arme menacante contre laquelle le commun des mortels ne peut rien faire d’autres que de prier. Le texte est très efficace (et très moderne) pour une chanson écrite en 1946:

Take warning my dear brother, be careful how you plan

Will The Fetus Be Aborted est une bravade à l’endroit de la droite religieuse et de ses efforts pour contrer le phénomène de l’avortement. La version de Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Levis et Carl Perkins (à l’époque jeunes poulins de Sun Records) est un reprise du classique folk Will The Circle Be Unbroken écrite et publiée en 1935 par les membres de la célèbre famille Carter.

La pièce Love Me I’m a Liberal est, quant à elle, une attaque brillante du protest singer Phil Ochs contre les ‘gauchistes du dimanche’ qui proclamaient être des progressistes, mais n’étaient pas prêts à assumer les conséquences politiques de leur choix. Très baveuse il y a 40 ans, elle est toujours d’actualité 25 ans plus tard dans la relecture qu’en font Biafra et Nixon.
